Praise the lord! We have found land. After false landfall was spotted and the crew creating a near mutiny we found an island. Finally. Rodrigo de Triana, a member of the Pinta’s crew, detected this island. I call it San Salvador. The indigenous people I have encountered are peaceful and friendly. I noted that they have a lot of gold ear ornaments, so I took some of them prisoners, and told them to guide me to the source of all their gold. A lot of the men I have seen have scars on their backs, which suggests that people from nearby islands come to San Salvador to capture them; they defend themselves the best they can. I believe that people from the mainland come here to take them as slaves. They ought to make good and skilled servants, for they repeat very quickly whatever we say to them. I think they can be easily made Catholics. My plans for the future are that we can start trading with these lands and we can come here to make colonies. It lives up to my expectations because it’s an island full of riches, but I expected more spices since this is India. I will head back to Spain with some of the men and then the King and Queen will decide if we will teach them the religion, since they don’t seem to have one.
